Diwali is a Hindu festival and is celebrated during the lunisolar month of Kartika. It is a five days long celebration with each day having its own significance in the Hindu culture. The festival is mainly associated with goddess Lakshmi popularly known as the goddess of prosperity, but various regional traditions link it to Rama & Sita, Vishnu, Krishna, Yama, Durga, Kali & Dhanavantari as per their own beliefs and values.

Why do we celebrate Diwali

Diwali is celebrated to honor the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana and his return to Ayodhya after an exile of 14 years. So, it has spiritual significance as well as it signifies a time of inner illumination. It is an opportunity to dig deep inside ourselves and choose the right path which leads to eternal bliss. No matter how difficult the situation gets, with persistence and perseverance, everything can be achieved.

Diwali is celebrated 20 days after Dusshera, With Dhanteras marking the first day of the five days festival. Diwali comes on the third day, which is the darkest night of the lunar month. In Jain tradition, Diwali is celebrated in observance of Mahavira Nirvana Diwas, the physical death & final nirvana of Mahavira. Sikh celebrates this day as Bandi Chor Diwas in remembrance of the release of Guru Shri Hargobind Ji from prison.

Various states in India celebrate this festival in different manners from each other altogether but keeping the essence intact. For example, In Bengal, this day is celebrated as ‘Kali Puja’. An avatar of goddess Durga. Firecrackers burst to welcome the goddess. In Tamilnadu, people awake early in the morning to have a traditional oil bath. Most Tamilians celebrate this day as the death of Naraksura, a feared demon, at the hands of Lord Krishna.
